Specialist Four Robert Catling gave all on that fateful day of 3 Jul 1966. We were fellow soldiers and members of Co B, 1st Bn, 35th Inf, 3d Bde Task Force, 25th Inf Div. He was killed in action in the Ia Drang Valley (Pleiku Province).

He will never be forgotten.

I served with SP4 Robert Catling in Hawaii and Vietnam. Rest in peace, my friend. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think of you or some of the other 19 men killed in action on 3 July 66.

In June 1966 the 1st Bn, 35th Infantry was working in the vicinity of the Duc Co airfield, at the northern end of the Ia Drang Valley and very close to the RVN/Cambodian border. On 24 June the battalion lost 15 men to an ambush about 15 kilometers to the south of Duc Co, and twenty more were killed when Bravo 1/35 engaged an NVA force while working along Route 569 about 6 km south of Duc Co.
