A Note from The Virtual Wall

The book and movie We Were Soldiers Once - And Young made the Ia Drang Valley well-known to Americans - but while the 1st Cavalry Division's battles in November 1965 were the first major engagements in the Ia Drang, they were hardly the last.

On 03 July 1966 elements of the 3rd Platoon, B/1/35th Infantry, were engaged by a reinforced VC company near Thang Duc on the northern edge of the Valley. Eighteen men were killed in action that day, and two more later died of wounds received.
