THE WALL

A silent expanse of jet black marble
Thousands of names
Carved in gold.
An army of children
Thousands of lives
A devastating sight
To behold

Who were these children
Who gave up their lives
In places with names
Like Da Nang
And Ia Drang
And Saigon.
The names on the wall
Are our fathers
And children,
Our uncles,
Our brothers,
Our sons.
And the war that killed
The children
It's said should have never begun.
Protesters were killed
At Kent State.
Soldiers,
Died in the 'Nam.
Kids came home in boxes
Families buried their sons.
I wasn't born in the sixties,
And I don't remember Saigon
But someone I loved
Died in Ia Drang
And the memory
Is all that goes on.
Sergeant George Anthony Wilson
The uncle that I never knew
There were thousands of heartbreaks
On the Wall
And my family has one there, too.

A silent expanse of jet black marble
With thousands of names
Carved in gold
A tombstone carved
For an army of children
Who died
Doing what they were told.
