My name is Mary L. Young. My father was killed in action in Vietnam on 10/05/66. His name was Rodney G. Thornton. He was a Sergeant in the Marine Corps (2/9), married to Alice A. Thornton.

My Dad had two children, myself and my brother, Patrick G. Thornton (deceased). Dad was born on 01/19/41 in Salt Lake City, Utah, and was raised in the Mormon faith. His name appears on the wall, panel 11E, line 50.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

The 2/9 Marines Command Chronology for October 1966 includes the entry paraphrased below:
2330, 05 Oct 1966 - At 2320 [11:20 PM] a Fox 2/9 platoon in its night defensive position received one round of artillery which burst directly above two four-man fighting positions. Three Marines were killed and eleven wounded. First aid was administered and a medevac helicopter was called.
The three men killed by the artillery shell were
  • Sgt Rodney G. Thornton, Salt Lake City, UT;
  • LCpl David J. Bohn, North Delta, UT; and
  • LCpl Robert G. Davidson, Glen Burnie, MD.
