Charles Vern McManus was a dedicated soldier who believed in the cause for which he perished. He was a good friend to me, a devoted husband to his wife, and a wonderful father to his son. He will ever be close to my heart. I salute you Charles, and hope to see you one day beyond the river. You will always be my hero.

On this Memorial Day, May 27, 2002,
I pay homage to a dear friend lost in battle in the Ia Drang Valley campaign of November 1965.

I have not forgotten.

Your sacrifice has made this a better world for those of us who came home to our families.

You will always be close to my heart.

Although Ssgt McManus was assigned to the 2nd Bn, 7th Cavalry, he had many friends in the 1/9th Cavalry. His loss was their loss.

I'm pleased to know the 1/9th Cavalry Bullwhip Squadron Association is considering recognizing him as an honorary member based on his close association with the unit in Vietnam in 1965. He was a brother in arms bonded to the men with whom I served in the 1/9th Cavalry.

In spirit, he will always be one of us.
