McGovern was a member of the gun team assigned to the third platoon. On 7/29/67 he was killed in action while on Operation KINGFISHER north of Con Thien. He was a good person and loved by everyone in his company. I think of him all the time. Semper Fi, my friend.

A Note from The Virtual WallOperation KINGFISHER was a reconnaissance-in-force into the Demilitarized Zone about 5 kilometers northwest of Con Thien, and resulted in bitter fighting with well-entrenched NVA regulars. The Marines lost 31 men on 29 July, including two from Hotel 2/9 - Cpl Alfred J. Gaspar of Fall River, MA, and LCpl James G. McGovern. A third Hotel 2/9 Marine, LCpl James P. Proctor of Tampa, Florida, died on 01 Aug of wounds received in the 29 July fighting. |
