I served as a rifleman under Lt. Lyons (pictured below on left) at the time of his death. Although he served as November platoon leader for only a very short time, he epitomized what a military leader should be. He was killed with four of his men in the defense of our nation.

May he rest in Peace!

The tribute above mentions that Lt. Lyons was killed with 4 of his men. All five men were killed when they encountered a booby trap placed by the enemy. The 5 men killed in the incident were:

SP4 Billy Dean Weitzel survived the detonation and was medevaced. He was admitted to a medical facility but later expired.

Lt. Lyons was survived by his mother, Margareta Florence (Franzen) (1916-2000), father William Michael Lyons, Jr. (1915-1985). Lt William Michael Lyons, III, is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington Virginia. His father served in WWII in the Navy.
