On February 6, 1968 Gregory Howard Lunde gave his life in the service of our Country. Gregory, then a member of First Tank Battalion, First Marine Division, was participating in hostile actions against communist insurgent forces near DaNang, in Quang Nam Province, Republic Of Vietnam. Unfortunately Gregory was one of the many casualties of the 1968 Communist Tet Offensive, which was probably the major turning point of the Vietnam War.

It was also the saddest of times for all of those who were there.

Greg and I went through Bootcamp, Infantry Training and Tank School together. We then served with Charlie Company, 5th Tanks at Camp Pendleton in the same platoon for about a year. Greg went over to Vietnam about two months before I did and he was assigned to the Marine tank battalion that was near Da Nang, Vietnam. I first heard of Greg's death when I was still in Vietnam. I was deeply saddened since I knew that Greg had hopes and dreams for his future in South Dakota. I visit his name on The Wall as often as I am in Washinton, DC. It is of little comfort but it is all that is left of a brother Vietnam Marine tanker.

Rest in peace, brave Marine. I will see you in Heaven when it is my turn to visit the Big Tank Park in the Sky.

From a brother Vietnam Marine Tanker,
