On 22 Sep 1969 B Company, 3/21st Infantry, conducted a combat assault into a river valley about 13 kilometers southeast of Hiep Duc. The landing was opposed, with three helicopters shot down. Once on the ground the infantrymen lost eight men before the enemy broke off the engagement and retreated into the jungled hills along the river. The eight soldiers killed in the day's fighting were

Ellis, son Larry Wayne Ellis, Jr of Richmond Virginia, three brothers, Jacob E, Jr, Walter B, and Curtis W. Ellis, one sister Agnes Elmore, and mother Novella (Thompson) Ellis (1910-2003). He was preceded in death by his father Jacob E. Ellis (1907-1956) of Shelby North Carolina. In addition to the medals in his shadow box above, he was awarded the Army of Occupation, Korean Service, and United Nations Service Medals. SGT Ellis is buried in Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina.- - The Virtual Wall, 10 October 2020
