PFC Dalton began his tour on June 24, 1969 and was killed in action 5 months later when his unit encountered a hostile force. He died from fragmentation wounds. Another unit member was killed on the same day. The two men were:

PFC Dalton's funeral notice appeared in the St Louis Dispatch newspaper. It read: DALTON: Michael Dalton, Pfc. USA, Friday, Nov 14, 1969. at Vietnam. Beloved son of John (Jack) and Bernice Dalton (nee Budo), dear brother of John T, Karen, Mary Ann Caceiabando, and Kathleen Davis, dear brother-in-law, grandson of Mary Dalton, nephew, uncle and cousin.

Funeral from White Mullen Chapel, 118 N. Florissant, Ferguson, Mon. Nov 24, 8:30 a.m. to Saints John and James Church. Interrment Calvery Cemetery. Masses preferred. In parlors, 1 p.m., Saturday.

His parents were then living on Bruce Avenue Ferguson, Missouri. Michael and his parents, Bernice (1924-1995) and John J (1925-1993) are buried in the Calvary Cemetery and Mausoleum, Saint Louis, St. Louis City, Missouri, all in Plot: 30, 1738.
