4 Feb 2005 Richard Cotter was remembered by his fellow classmates at 35th Reunion of TBS Class Golf 7-68 and also 47th OCS Class, companies E & F, October 2003. Richard was a member of that class. Those two officers may not have served in Vietnam; if they did, they survived the experience.

 

22 Sep 2006 2nd Lieutenant Richard Lane Cotter was my roommate at Basic School G Company 1st Platoon Class 7-68. Following Basic School, we went to Armored Vehicle School at Camp Pendleton, CA. We were very close in Basic School and grew even closer while in California. He was my best friend for over a year while we served our nation. As time drew near for us to go across the pond to join our units in Viet Nam, we both knew that something bad could happen and that every day we had on this earth together was a special blessing and we lived it that way. I have missed Rick for 38 years ... I will always remember this great man amongst men. Allen Cohen cj72@bellsouth.net

 

A Note from The Virtual Wall The 1st Amtrac Battalion Command Chronology for the month contains the following entry: "Elements of H&S Company, LVT Platoon, while on patrol made contact with 6 to 10 NVA/VC in vicinity of YD259657. LVT reaction while enroute to reinforce element received M-79 and small arms fire. Action resulted in 4 KIA, 2 WIA friendly and 3 NVA KIA (confirmed)." The four men were: 2ndLt Richard L. Cotter, Peabody, MA (Silver Star) Cpl Barry V. Detrempe, Peoria, IL (Silver Star) HM3 Huger L. Phelps, Greenfield, IN (Silver Star) LCpl Carl E. Goldsmith, Clarksburg, WV As noted, three of the four received the Silver Star, America's third highest award for courage under fire.
