I still have trouble forgiving myself at your loss. I remember walking point and going up the stream - I should have gone farther. You and I were fairly new to the unit, and you seemed like an upright guy. Over there death was often so quick and ugly - but now you are at rest.

Smitty and I miss you, old friend. I remember the first time I saw you, I thought to myself, this guy should be in Junior High instead of Vietnam, but I see we were both about the same age. As I stood beside you calling in your medevac, you sat up and looked at yourself. I wanted to say something, but didn't know what to say, so I said nothing. I have always felt guilty that I didn't do or say something to comfort you. Forgive me, old buddy. I think we all did the best we could. Gone but never forgotten.

Your friend, Joe

From a brother-grunt,
