SGT Waters was killed when a supporting artillery unit, firing toward the enemy, dropped a few mortar rounds into the Command Post, killing SGT Waters and SGT Merle Allen Dentino, Peoria, Illinois.

Witnesses stated about 27 others were wounded. They had just returned from the Cambodia Invasion the day before At the time of death, SGT Waters was survived by his parents.

He is buried with his parents, Joe G. Waters (1922 - 2010) ( U. S. Navy veteran of World War II) and Bobbie Hicks Waters (1926 - 1988) in the Elam Church Cemetery, Four Points (Jenkins County), Georgia.
