Prior to joining the U.S. Army, Norman grew up in Chicago, where he attended Lane Technical High School, graduating in the Class of 1966. He became a Warrant Officer and Helicopter Pilot after graduating the Army's Warrant Officer Rotary Wing Aviator Course and Flight Class of 68-501. He was sent to Vietnam shortly thereafter. Four men of the 191st AHC died when their helicopter was shot down by small arms fire, crashed and burned, 4 kilometers northwest of Dong Tam. The aircraft was shot down on 5 June and the men were reported as missing. They were recovered in the days following, and once identified, their status changed from missing to killed in action (Akers on 20 June; Tejano on 10 June; Turone on 17 June; and Vines on 18 June). At the time of his death, Norman was survived by his parents Leatrice and Vincent Turone, his brother Michael, his sisters Jeannette Schoen, Michele Poulos, Deborah Gansky, and several nieces and nephews.
