Sgt. Billy Thompson was not my Platoon Sergeant. However, he was difficult to ignore. He had an easy way about him, but you respected him, and you always felt you could trust him.

I always knew I would follow him too. There was an air of courage about him. He was a leader of men.

I still remember him to this day and I still respect him.

  • SSG Allen Brackins, Blakely, GA
  • SGT Robert L. Adams, Tarentum, PA
  • SGT Henry P. Pereda, Agana, GU
  • PFC Richard A. Recupero, Key West, FL
Two others, PFC David W. Terwilliger, Dearborn, MI, from "A" Company, and PFC John A. Fontaine, Methuen, MA, a medic from HHC, also were killed in action that day.
