My memories of Fritz are starting to fade as the years come and go. I remember Fritz as a fun person with a heart of gold. I was part of a small platoon of construction workers who arrived at the Base camp where Fritz was stationed. We built a helicopter landing pad. While working there I noticed a young man watching us labor in the hot sun. After a couple of hours I told the platoon to take a break. All at once this young man walked out to us with a cardboard box filled with cans of the coldest beer that I had ever had. He passed them out to us and sat down to shoot the bull with us. He said that he was Fritz and he was from Wisconsin. We sat there for about a half an hour talking and then went back to work. Fritz and I became friends and every chance that I had I would hitch a ride down to his compound for a visit. It was really a sad day when I found out that Fritz had died. The world lost a fantastic person. When I came back to the States I went out to Wisconsin and visited with his Dad Rudy. He was a super nice man and was so very proud of Fritz. He told me lots of stories about Fritz and how he was a champion soft ball pitcher. Rest in peace, Fritz.
