"Smokey", you were one hell of a pilot. I remember you pulling a couple of my guys out of an impossible LZ early in '69. I'm glad I had a chance to meet you later to personally thank you for that operation. They lived, I'm sorry you didn't.

He was one of the bravest men I knew. I probably flew with him more than any other crew chief in the 254th. He cared not only about the wounded he was there to pick up but always asked the crew how they felt about doing anything out of the ordinary. I was there for his last mission. We were all around the radio listening when he was taken from us. I was a close friend with 3 of the 4 people on the ship that went down that day and I know that when he went back in for the second time, after already being shot at the first try, he checked with his men to make sure they agreed. He was that type of person. I admired him as much as anyone I know. He also was one of the best pilots we ever had in the 254th. I miss him to this day. He was a great loss to many. He lost his life trying to save others. A brave and great man.
