Republic of Vietnam
Authority:
By direction of the President, under provisions of the Act of Congress, approved 9 July 1918
Reason:
For gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam.  Private First Class Seawel distinguished himself on 223 March 1971 while serving as perimeter guard during combat operations near Khe Sanh in the Republic of Vietnam. Private Seawol moved from the protection of his bunker during an enemy mortar barage to strengthen the flank position of his bunker area from an apparent ground attack. While gaining a good vantage point on the perimeter wire, he noted movement of enemy sappers. Sounding the alarm to alert the others of his unit, Private Seawel knowingly disclosed his position and was attacked by the enemy. He engaged the enemy and drove themm off, but one of the wounded enemy was able to throw a satchel charge that fatally wounded Private Seawel. His bravery and alertness was instrumental in saving numerous friendly lives while being directly responsible for stopping a major portion of the sapper attack. Private First Class Seawel's action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
