Staff Sergeant Rikard, the communications chief for Mike Battery, was manning the switchboard during a rocket attack on the Artillery Plateau, Camp J. J. Carroll, keeping communication lines open to allow counter-mortar fire by our Batteries during the attack. Because of his dedication to duty and his concern for his fellow Marines, he paid the highest price for his bravery. His sacrifice for those of us who were there that night is a tribute to his character and a testimony to the dedication Marines have for each other. A great leader and true "Hero" who is missed by all of us who knew him.

A Note from The Virtual WallThe artillery emplacements at Camp Carroll held units other than those from the 12th Marines, including the long-range 175mm self-propelled guns of the Army's 2nd Bn, 94th Artillery - and they too lost a man during the rocket attack on 07 March 1967. The two dead were SSgt Charles D. Rikard, Batesburg, SC, Mike 4/12 Marines, and SP5 Ralph L. Stillwagoner, Paden City, WV, HQ Btry 2/94 Arty. |
