Robert, the son of Freda Grace Hawk Jones and Ardell Walton Pitts; stepson of James Jones. Robert graduated from Galveston Ball High in 1966 and enlisted in the Army in 1968. He was killed at his base camp in Bin Duong Province when the area came under rocket attack. In 1969, a Memorial Key to the VFW Memorial Chapel of Raymond C. Paul Post 880 in Austin Texas was purchased in memory of her son was presented to his mother shortly after the article in the paper on June 15, 1969.

PFC Pitts was featured in the June 27, 1969 LIFE magazine cover story entitled "The Faces of the American Dead in Vietnam: One Week's Toll. There were 242 names with photos in that article."

His mother, Freda Grace Jones passed away in Johnson City Texas on September 22, 1998 at age 73. She was remembered by her family for her laughter, smile, and the way she said to the young ones, "I love you once, I love you twice, I love you more than beans and rice"

Robert is buried at Hayes Grace Memorial Park, Hitchcock, Texas. His marker is shown below
