Mike, yours was one of the names I had jotted down on scraps of paper of guys I trained with or served with with intentions of contacting them when we got "home". Over the years, as I perused my service memorabilia, I would find your name, and other names whom I would try to locate. Some I found and contacted. Others I never have found. Your name, Mike, I found today (November 12, 2004) on a list of Vietnam casualties. I wasn't sure it was you until I looked at a picture of you on The Virtual Wall, posted by a friend of yours, Jim Kramer. I was shocked and stunned. Yes, Mike, I've finally found you. I am so sorry!
From a friend from training at Fort Polk, Louisiana, |
Today as my husband and I were placing flowers on our parents' graves, I glanced over and saw your stately granite memorial, and it caused me to remember the day of your funeral. The weather was angry and snowy, yet it was thundering and lightning, a rare combination. In some small way, posting this has given me the chance to thank you for giving the ultimate price for the freedom it affords us all, for my children's freedom and for my grandchildren's freedom. Losing you has taught us all that freedom is not free.
Thanks, Mike. Your childhood neighbor girl... |
