River Assault Division 91 with A Company, 3rd Batttalion, 60th Infantry, were en route to beaching areas on Giong Trom Canal about 6 miles SouthEast of Ben Tre, South Vietnam. They were ambushed on the Ben Tre Stream. They immediately turned toward the ambush positions, saturated the area with machine gun and cannon fire, and landed their infantrymen to counter attack the enemy and search the area.

The attack consisted of a barrage of recoiless-rifle, rocket, and heavy automatic weapons fire. Two men from the Assault Support Patril Boat (ASPB) 91-4 were killed during the assault. CPL Martin was lost when the Navy boats were extracting the combat troops of A Company and while attempting to do so from the landing area, he was caught on the ramp and pulled under the water where he drowned.

James was survived by his wife Mattie Martin of Memphis and his mother, Ethel Rounds, Holly Springs, Mississippi.

CPL James Henry Martin is buried in Memphis National Cemetery, Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee.
