A Note from The Virtual WallJoseph Cyril Missar was a career Marine officer with service in World War II and Korea, where as a Lieutenant Colonel he commanded the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines.His son, Joseph C. Missar, Jr., was graduated from St. John's College High School, Washington, DC, with the class of 1961. He attended The Citadel (The Military College of South Carolina) where he was a stand-out football player, was graduated with the Class of 1965, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Marines. Upon completion of The Basic School at Quantico 2ndLt Missar was assigned to the 9th Marines, which had arrived in Vietnam in 1965. On 06 May 1966, Delta 1/5 Marines lost two men - 2ndLt Joseph C. Missar and Pfc Raymond P. Schwesinger of Seelyville, Pennsylvania. 2ndLt Missar was buried on 16 May 1966 in Site 2946, Section 37, of the Arlington National Cemetery. On 06 Nov 2004, 40 years after his last football game at The Citadel and 38 years after his death in Vietnam, 2ndLt Missar will be inducted into The Citadel Athletic Hall of Fame. 1LT Frank A. Murphy, US Army, was Missar's classmate at The Citadel; he was killed in action on 07 December 1966 while serving with the 22nd Infantry Regiment. |
