A Note from The Virtual WallOn 12 April 1969 Captains Arnold Lamp and Charles Mattern of the 16th Tac Recon Squadron departed Ton San Nhut Air Base (near Saigon) in an RF-4C PHANTOM (tail number 67-0446). The Phantom went down while over Lam Dong Province, South Vietnam.Captain Mattern was picked up by search and rescue forces. Captain Lamp was declared as Killed in Action, although his body was not recovered at the time - leading to the supposition that the circumstances of the crash were such that there was no chance of survival. Almost 25 years later, on 13 December 1993, the Vietnamese government allowed repatriation of human remains thought to be those of Captain Lamp. On 19 July 1995, the U.S. government announced the positive identification of Captain Lamp's remains and he was returned to his family for burial on American soil. |
