I served with Sergeant Kohlbeck for over a year and he was a wonderful person and friend. He was always there to help, and possesed a great musical talent. Me and the other guys from that band miss him.

John Barrett

The 1st Cav band was the only US military band in Vietnam.

The band practices for a concert at An Khe.
The man standing is SP5 Dillard;
to his left, sitting, is SFC Kohlbeck.
Both died on 20 February.

SFC Kohlbeck is sitting, music in his lap.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

Two men from the 1st Cavalry Division's HHC & Band died on 20 Feb 1966:
  • SFC Victor J. Kohlbeck, Manitowoc, WI, and
  • SP5 Thomas M. Dillard, Sheffield, AL.

The casualty records for both men indicate they died from gunshot wounds, but other sources - a family friend for SFC Kohlbeck and SP5 Dillard's Company Commander - attribute their deaths to injuries received during a mortar attack. By report, SFC Kohlbeck was helping to carry wounded to a medevac helicopter when he was fatally wounded by mortar fragments.

The point-of-contact for this memorial is
a friend who served with him,
John Barrett
