A Note from The Virtual Wall

SP4 Robert Ketelaar was one of six men of the 213th Assault Support Helicopter Company who died when their CH-47C (hull number 68-15824) crashed:
  • 1LT Curtis Paul Challberg, pilot
  • WO1 Barrett Chamberland Brown, copilot
  • SP5 Michael Terry Boat, flight engineer
  • SP5 Arthur Harry Johnson, crew chief
  • SP4 Robert Lee Ketelaar, gunner
  • SP4 Moses Iwane Kuahiwinui, Jr., gunner
The crash occurred while the CHINOOK crew was conducting a routine aircraft recovery of a USAF O-1E Birddog as a sling load. The O-1E oscillated upwards into the CHINOOK's rear rotor. The CH-47 then entered an inverted dive and crashed, killing all aboard. The VHPA helicopter accident report contains additional information (opens in a new window).
