WASHINGTON (AP) -- The remains of an American shot down over North Vietnam in 1968 have been identified as Navy Lt. j.g. Barry E. Karger of Prather, Calif., the Pentagon said Thursday.

Karger, a member of the Navy reserves, was lost in the vicinity of Quang Binh province on May 14, 1968, when the A4-F aircraft he was piloting on a strike mission over North Vietnam appeared to go out of control and crash, the Pentagon said. He was 22 at the time.

His remains were turned over to U.S. authorities last June following a joint U.S.-Vietnamese search, and were to be returned Thursday to Travis Air Force Base in California from Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii.
