Tom was awarded the Silver Star for the action in which he was killed. His Award Citation reads in part...
"Sergeant Kamp distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 17 November 1969 while serving as a squad leader with Company B, 2nd Battalion (Airmobile), 7th Cavalry near Fire Support Base Jamie (Tay Ninh Province). When the point squad was taken under fire by an entrenched enemy platoon and several casualties resulted, Sergeant Kamp rushed forward into the contact area and began delivering a heavy volume of fire. Efforts to rescue the wounded were drawing enemy fire from a position to his front. Realizing the enemy position would have to be eliminated in order to extract the wounded, Sergeant Kamp assaulted the well fortified bunker, knocking it out with a fragmentation grenade. As he attempted to move back and help with the evacuation of the wounded, he was mortally wounded by enemy fire."
Tom is in our thoughts daily. His memory, like the pain of his loss and the numbing ache of the emptiness his death has caused, has never faded from our hearts. We love him, and miss him terribly. Our hearts also go out to everyone who has a loved one on the Wall.
