SSG Richard L. Jernigan was a career soldier from Pecos, Texas. He had served in the Army 8 years and began his tour in Vietnam as a general vehicle mechanic and was assigned to the ASA group. He died of illness two months into his tour. He is remembered by the Permian Basin Vietnam Veterans' Memorial in Midland, Texas and by his community.

I was able to obtain official mortuary records from the U.S. Army Resources Command. A review shows that SSG Richard Lee Jernigan died from viral pneumonia contracted two months after he began his tour in Vietnam.

At the time of his death, his family was living at Fort Richardson, Alaska and SSG Jernigan was buried at the Fort Richardson National Cemetery with full military honors.
