Local Soldier Is Vietnam War Victim

Cpl. Jerry R. Howerton, 21, of 812 Eight St., was killed Sunday while serving with the Marines near Da Nang, Vietnam.

He is the son of Mrs. Marie Heslep, 812 Eight St., and Ernest Howerton of Willoughby.

Cpl. Howerton was serving his second enlistment in the Marines and his third tour of duty in Vietnam. He had been awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received earlier.

He was a graduate of Portsmouth West High School, where he was a member of the football team.

Surviving besides the parents are a brother, Robert, who is serving with the Army and is scheduled to go to Vietnam; two sisters, Mrs. Connie Bennett of Carey's Run and Mrs. Linda Stewart of Norfolk, Va., and several nieces and nephews.
