A Note from The Virtual Wall

The 3rd Bn, 5th Marines was engaged in Operation PIPESTONE CANYON from 26 May until 15 June, when the battalion was moved south into the Phu Loc Valley to conduct search-and-destroy operations on the northern slopes of the Nui Mat Rang mountains which form the southern boundary of the valley.

On 22 June Mike 3/5 came across an enemy base camp and was directed to remain in place while war materials were removed and the camp destroyed. While India and Kilo companies continued their searches in the nearby areas of the massif, Mike was limited to security patrols in the immediate vicinity of the enemy camp. Lance Corporal Householter was killed on such a patrol on 23 June. Once the camp had been demolished, Mike 3/5 returned to further search operations until the three companies were withdrawn to the An Hoa Combat Base, Kilo and Mike on 26 and India on 27 June.

During the ten day period the 3/5 Marines lost at least eight men killed in action. Two other men died of wounds previously received - one from H&S Company on 18 June and one from Kilo Company on 21 June. Available documentation does not allow The Virtual Wall to determine when these two men were wounded. The ten Marines were
