I have such vivid memories of playing baseball against you. I now live in your home town of Orting. I drive by the baseball field of the high school and think of you, one of the best pitchers there was. I stand there and think of what should have been. I can not say how proud I was to play against you and for what you have done.

Billy Jo, it's been over 40 years. You are still in my thoughts daily. We'll meet again when I reach the great beyond with you.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

The book and movie We Were Soldiers Once - and Young made the 7th Cavalry's November 1965 fight in the Ia Drang Valley well known to Americans - but the 1st Cavalry Division's losses in the Ia Drang area neither began nor ended with that battle.

On 02 August 1966, A Company, 2/7th Cavalry, was back in the Valley. Eighteen Americans died on that day in an engagement with North Vietnamese regulars at Landing Zone PINK, 23 kilometers west-southwest of the Catecka airfield:

  • 2LT Howard C. McCarthy, Glenolden, PA
  • PSGT Wiley L. Phillips, Polkville, MS
  • SGT Hiram J. Knighton, Chicago, IL
  • SP4 Kent L. Amerine, Great Bend, KS (medic, HHC with A/2/7 Cav)
  • SP4 Glasco J. Fryar, Sampson, NC
  • SP4 William J. Henry, Lynchburg, SC
  • SP4 Isaac E. Hunt, Jackson, TN
  • SP4 Earl Melton, Baltimore, MD
  • SP4 Danny D. Prince, Oxford, OH
  • SP4 Fred R. Saiz, Bernalillo, NM
  • PFC Larry K. Barner, Loganton, PA
  • PFC Robert G. Burrell, Albany, NY
  • PFC Dale H. Gibson, Rock Falls, IL
  • PFC Harlin Harris, Fort Meade, FL
  • PFC William J. Hobert, Orting, WA
