David Roy Hayward was the best that Natchitoches had to offer. He was kind, handsome, outgoing, athletic and well liked by all who met him. I was stationed at Daenner Kaserne, Kaiserslautern, West Germany on that day in 1971 when I saw his name on the KIA list in the Army Times. I Googled his name today and found that he went into the Army 12 Sept 1970, I entered 11 Sept 1970. He wore the 101st Abn Div patch then and I wear it as my combat patch now in 2008. I wish I could be half the soldier now as he must have been then. I am not surprised that he was a Ranger.
