An outstanding friend, leader, and Marine. He was in the first Combined Action unit formed in July 1965 and was assigned to Loc Bon Village, Thua Thien Province, South VietNam. You're still in our thoughts and prayers. Semper Fi

A Note from The Virtual Wall

The Marines have a long history of counter-insurgency operations dating from the Spanish-American War, and one of the first things they did on arrival in Vietnam was to establish the "Combined Action Program". Under this concept, a squad-sized element of Marines, usually including a Navy Corpsman, was mated with a Vietnamese Regional or Popular Forces unit. The Combined Action unit provided the RF/PF unit with training, additional firepower, and the ability to call in supporting air and artillery fire. The Combined Action teams lived in the villages, sharing both daily life and daily risks with the Vietnamese. Initially each Marine battalion formed Combined Action teams within its own area of responsibility, but by mid-1968 the CAP had grown to a separate regimental-size command directly subordinate to the Commanding General, III MAF.

The 3rd Bn, 4th Marines Command Chronology for November 1965 contains two entries regarding the 3/4 CAP engagement on 29 November:

Corporal Thomas Green was the Marine killed in the action.
