A Note from The Virtual Wall

On 02 Feb 1967 the 283rd Medical Detachment, a component of the 498th Medical Company (Air Ambulance), had a medevac helicopter shot down in Bien Hoa Province. The Huey, UH-1D tail number 65-12881, was hit by .51 caliber heavy machinegun fire and went in from about 800 feet. All aboard the aircraft were killed.

The Vietnam Helicopter Pilots' Association database associates only the four 283rd Med Det crewmen with this incident:

  • CPT Joe R. Fulghum, Murfreesboro, TN, pilot;
  • 1LT Alan H. Zimmerman, Midland Park, NJ, copilot;
  • SP4 Thomas M. Martinez, Pensacola, FL, medic; and
  • PFC Philip H. Johnson, Redondo Beach, CA, crew chief.
However, two other men died under exactly the same circumstances - passengers in a helicopter shot down in Bien Hoa Province on 02 Feb. UH-1D tail number 65-12881 is the only known helo loss in Bien Hoa, leading to the conclusion that these two men were aboard the aircraft:
  • CPT Marion G. Runion, Radford, VA, B Co, 1st Med Bn, and
  • PFC Luis G. Mora, Columbia, A Co, 3rd Bn, 39th Infantry
