I am Don's only brother. He contacted me hours before he left for Vietnam. Having finished two tour there, he asked my advice, I told him to keep his butt down, find someone who had been in country 9 months and do what they do, and don't try to be a hero!!!
Thirty days later Don's unit submitted his name for the Medal of Honor.
His wife, of one month before he was drafted, was honored to receive a posthumous award of the Distinguished Service Cross in his honor. It's hard to tell a hero - not to be one. He didn't want to go, but went because of his sense of duty. I went twice because I wanted to. Don, not only are you a hero to your unit, service and country, but you are my HERO!!!
From his brother,
