I remember you so clearly. I remember conversations that we had while we were squad members in Kilo Company. Your dedication to duty and to your fellow Marines rose to the highest that fateful day. We spoke of your bravery. We shed a tear at your loss. We carry you with us in thoughts and deed since we left that awful war. We live on and teach those good things that you cannot. It is part of who we were and who we are. Rest in peace my friend, we will meet again on the highest ground.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

The 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines, Command Chronology for July 1968 contains the following entry:
"5 July 68. At 0830H a element of Company "K" accompanied by the Battalion Commander made contact with an estimated platoon of NVA at YD 156706. The NVA initiated contact with detonation of a command detonated mine, 60mm mortar and small arms fire which resulted in casualties to the point squad. [Air and artillery were called in and Kilo 3/3 maneuvered against the fortified area.] Contact was broken at 1400H. NVA casualties were 15 NVA KIAs confirmed. Friendly casualties were 2 KIAs and [unreadable] WIAs evacuated."
The two Marines killed in the action were LCpl Richard J. Cegielski of Cleveland, Ohio and Pfc Carroll S. Dieudonne of Silver Spring, Maryland.
