Sergeant Culwell died from wounds he received while on a combat operation as a result of being hit by fragments of a hostile booby trap. He was admitted to a military medical facility, on an unknown date that he was wounded, placed on the Very Serious Injured list and later expired.


Jimmy Lee Culwell, the son of Arthur Perry Culwell (1927-1977), World War II veteran, and Wilda Faye Isbell Lowrance (1927-2000), was survived by his parents, step parents, and brothers Kenneth Ray and Arthur Eugene Culwell.

His father is buried in Akins Cemetery Akins, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma while Jimmy Lee and his mother are buried in Resthaven Memorial Park, Lubbock, Texas.
