The following article is taken from The Philadelphia Daily News, special supplement entitled 'SIX HUNDRED AND THIRTY,' October 26, 1987.

Cornwell, a private first class, joined the Marine Corps in August 1966 and was assigned to Company D of the 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, 3rd Marine Division in Viet Nam in April 1967. The 21-year-old rifleman died in Quang Tri Province three weeks later, on May 8, 1967.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

The 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, was among the Allied forces engaged in bitter fighting around Con Thien on 08 May 1967. Forty-four Marines and sailors died in the fight, 36 of them from 1/4; of those, 18 were from Delta 1/4:
