1st Lt. James Warren Cockrell (Jimmy to his friends) was a 1966 graduate of the University of Mississippi. He enlisted in the Marines January 16, 1967, and received his officer training at Quantico, Virginia. He was placed on the Commandant of the Marine Corps' Honor List and was in the top 10 Marines of Officer Candidate School. He volunteered for Vietnam and asked for combat duty. He began his tour in Vietnam November 22, 1967. Jimmy gained the Vietnam Service Medal, the Southeast Asia Service Citation, the National Defense Medal and the Purple Heart. He was killed during a reconnaissance mission in the Quang Tri Province of the Republic of Vietnam.

Jimmy was my only brother and if anyone reading this has any information about him or photos of him during his brief tour in Vietnam, please contact me.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

The reconnaissance platoon for Battalion Landing Team 1/3 was the 1st Plt, D Co, 1st Recon Bn, commanded by 1st Lt Cockrell. The unit lost three men on 26 May 1968 - 1stLt Cockrell and LCpl Jimmy L. Moore of Greenville, SC, to an "explosive device" and Pfc Larry J. Sinegal of Houston, Texas, to gunshot.
