Thank you for honoring those who served our country in America's longest war by reading these comments from those of us who are the survivors of these men. Always work FOR peace - and strive for kindness and understanding of those with whom we differ.

Michael died before his 27th birthday - 6 months before his daughter, Michele, was born in Tampa, Florida.

I give thanks for his life, and my life is richer for his presence - however brief - and for the daughter he never knew - now my best friend.

Life is a Wonder.....

From his widow,
Dana Chwan

Notes from The Virtual Wall

On 30 Sep 1965 a combined force of F-4 and F-105 aircraft from Takhli and Ubon RTAFBs struck the road and railroad bridge at Ninh Binh, North Vietnam. Two aircraft were shot down:
  • F-4C tail number 64-0660 from the 47th TFS, Takhli, crewed by Captain C. M. Chesnutt and 1stLt Michael D Chwan, was hit by large caliber AAA fire and crashed immediately; neither crewman escaped the aircraft.

  • F-105D tail number 61-0117 from the 334th TFS, Ubon, flown by LtCol Melvin J. Killian, was hit by a surface-to-air missile, caught fire, and exploded. LtCol Killian, Commanding Officer of the 334th, did not eject from the aircraft.
The remains of all three men were repatriated on 20 Mar 1985, with positive identification announced on 08 Apr 1985.
