Shelby's on the left and I'm on the right in this photograph, which was taken somewhere south of Danang. We were with Golf Company, 2/1 Marines, with the machine gun team in Charlie Squad. Shelby is holding a picture of his new wife from the Philippines ... he married while he was on R & R. He died 33 days before his rotation date. I have more pictures of him together with the machine team and would like to share them with others who remember Shelby Carter.
From a close friend in Vietnam, |
I served with Carter, he was in Guns and I was in Alpha Squad. Carter and I been through a lot and Carter married a girl I loved. If I had only done a better job of being a Marine my friend would be alive today. If I could I'd give my life for his and a few others today and every day since May 1970. To his Family, I'm so so sorry! I don't asked to be forgiven, I don't want to be. I have nightmares about Schrader and Carter even today. I weep daily for my friends, I know they're in a better place than where I'll be going. Semper Fi! My Brothers!

Shelby and I grew up together in central Louisiana near the small town of Dry Prong. Shelby and I were very close, spending many of our summers together, camping, fishing, and working in the hay fields. His Mother ran a small general store in the village of Williana, where Shelby and I spent many hours sitting outside the store on a bread-box, making our plans on becoming Marines, after watching Richard Widmark in the movie "Halls of Montezuma". Shelby was a good friend and I miss him.
