Patrick was pulling slack when he stepped on a booby trap.
As a Sergeant he did not belong in the front of the column,
but he was covering the back of his best friend.
His best friend was a fire team leader and did not belong on the point either.
That was the character of his leadership, no job too small to handle.
That was the character of his friendship, no sacrifice too big for a friend.

I had taken point in order to teach the new guys in our squad.
I did not know Pat was behind me until after the explosion.
There is no greater love than to sacrifice your life for a friend.
I will forever carry his memory in my heart.
My hope is that America appreciates his loss as well.
