During the Vietnam War there was no overriding reason to keep close track of names of the men and women who died as a result of military service in the war zone. A decade after the withdrawal of US forces, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was approved for construction. The service branches went back through their records to identify our dead by name. Inevitably some men who should have been named on the "Wall" were not. Over the years additional names have been inscribed on the Wall - some were men who died after the war as a result of wounds received in the war, and others were men whose names were overlooked in earlier years. The Department of Defense has approved having his name etched on the Wall during May 2014, along with 13 other names. His name will be placed somewhere near the names of those who died the same day. SFC Frederick J Baum had extended his Vietnam tour on 1 February 1970 after re-enlisting in Vietnam on 21 September 1967. He was in an Authorized leave status a year later in February 1971 when he had a heart attack. It's unclear exactly when and where his heart attack happened but he was in the US Naval Hospital on Guam when he passed away. According to his Record of Emergency contacts, he was survived by two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Shearan and Mrs. Helen Bomberg, both living in Baltimore. His father and mother Marlene M. Baum were both deceased. He was postumously awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service on 23 March 1971, General Order 1284, from HQ US Army, Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence. The medal appears as: It is unknown where SFC Baum was finally laid to rest. |
