Norman W."Spanky" Bates, you had the brightest blue eyes that had that certain twinkle of mischief. You were everybody's friend except for the 1st Sgt., and he put you on "first cook" duty back at Dong Tam... and you fried the latrine. Your outgoing personality is sorely missed. The last mission you went out on as RTO with the FO team, to replace a slacker, and you and Goins were lost. Well, buddy, you are still missed and will never be forgotten.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

Private Norman W. Bates and Corporal Gordon L. Goins were part of a Foward Observer team with the 3rd Battalion, 60th Infantry. On 10 January 1968, 3/60 was heavily engaged in the border areas of Dinh Tuong and Go Cong Provinces southeast of Saigon. Eighteen Americans were killed in action - including Bates and Goins.
