A Note from The Virtual Wall

The TET Offensive began at the end of January 1968 and rapidly developed into a very bloody affair indeed. Hue, the old imperial capital city, was a primary objective for the VC, and the city had been heavily infiltrated during January. VC troops captured the fortified Citadel in the heart of the urban area and held it for three weeks. During that period the 1st Bn, 1st Marines and the 2nd Bn, 5th Marines lost at least 62 men killed in action with a great many more wounded. Six of those men died on 04 Feb 1968:
  • A Co, 1st Bn, 1st Marines
    • Sgt Alfredo Gonzalez, Edinburg, TX (Medal of Honor)
    • LCpl Larry G. Clark, Huntsville, AL
    • Pvt Leonard Breaux, Reserve, LA

  • F Co, 2nd Bn, 5th Marines
    • LCpl Wayne A. Washburn, Peoria Heights, IL
    • Pfc William C. Barnes, Battle Creek, MI

  • H Co, 2nd Bn, 5th Marines
    • Cpl James R. Hedger, Pontiac, MI
