CPL COLIN JAMES BACH

02 Apr 2008

I served with Colin and was by his side the day he died. We were being lifted from the DMZ that day when we started taking incoming artillery from deep inside North Vietnam. I was in a foxhole with our air liaison officer, Lt. Wiley, the battalion XO, and a LT artillery FO when the 130 mm round hit on the lip of our hole seriously wounding the 3 officers in the hole but not me. Colin was in the foxhole just below ours. The previous round flew right over our foxholes and I believe he knew that we were on the gun's trajectory and was trying to get to a different foxhole when the last round hit which killed him. I was by his side with the Doc who was trying to treat him and helped remove his flak jacket to treat his wounds. But he died before we could save him. I didn't know him well but will never forget that day or his death. You will always be remembered by me, Colin, till the day I die.
