A Note from The Virtual Wall

The 7th Marines' Command Chronology contains the following entry for 07 Feb 1968:
"071330H: A Company L squad combat patrol engaged an estimated enemy company (AT 954628). Reinforcements dispatched from the parent company also came under heavy enemy automatic weapons and mortar fire on arrival at the scene. Both 82mm and 60mm mortars as well as B-40 rockets were employed by the enemy. The contact continued through the day, culminating in 32 NVA KIA and the capture of a 60mm mortar as well as other items of military equipment. USMC losses were 4 KIA, 24 WIA."
The four men killed in action were from Lima 3/7:
  • Sgt Robert F. Lucero, Eaton, CO;
  • LCpl Arturo M. Ortiz, Los Angeles, CA;
  • Pfc John Gibson, Riceboro, GA; and
  • Pfc Calvin O. Jackson, Columbus, GA.
Pfc David M. Anderson of H&S Company, one of the men wounded by enemy mortar fire, died from his wounds later in the day.
