A Note from The Virtual Wall

Until mid-April 1968 the 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines had been engaged in the defense of Khe Sanh, particularly Hill 881 South. On 16 April the Battalion was withdrawn from Khe Sanh, with all 993 men moved to the Quang Tri Combat Base by 1900. The 3/26 Command Chronology for April contains the following entry:
"16 April 1968: At approximately 1900H, the Battalion moved from KSCB to Quang Tri Combat Base. At 2300H, Co L received 7 incoming rocket rounds resulting in 4 USMC KIA and 16 USMC WIA."
2ndLt Ammon's date of death is recorded as 16 April; the other three men are carried as having died on the 17th:
  • 2ndLt William R. Ammon, Cincinnati, OH;
  • LCpl Larry G. Russell, Chicago, IL;
  • Pfc John D. Houston, Los Angeles, CA; and
  • Pfc Tommie D. Williams, Columbus, OH.
2ndLt Ammon was one of the warriors who defended
Hill 881 South
