"Al" was attached to the 3rd Marine Division in the Northern I Corps. He was with the 2nd Battalion 4th Marines, 9th MAB. We were a float battalion supporting the 9th Marines. Al was killed outside of Camp Carrol while sweeping for mines on the road from Camp Carrol to Highway 9. We were being used as a blocking force during the battle for Khe Sanh.

I was the hospital corpsman that served with his platoon, but since the sweep group was small I did not go on the sweep. According to the Marines who survived, during the fire fight Al heard someone call 'corpsman'. Instead of asking where they were hit, Al went to the spot and was killed by NVA. Al had less than a month to go on his 13 month tour.

Al was a great guy, full of life, and was admired by his fellow Marines.

Thank you, Peggy, for this touching tribute to my brother. I found this on a search of our last name and could not believe my eyes. It has been a fast 35 years since my brother left this earth for a better place and a lot of our loved ones have now joined him. We will never forget and because of this now other people might remember his name and know what he stood for. I hope our paths will all cross again someday soon...

WE love and miss ya, Butch,
your brother,
Al

Uncle Butchie,

Though I never had a chance to meet you, all I have ever heard was that you were a great guy. I know my Dad missed you very much and you had so little time left until you came home. It's peaceful to know that you, Grandma, Grandpap and my Dad are reunited in heaven.
